FOCUS: A
HISTORY OF FORDS C-SEGMENT WORLD CAR
More than 9.2 million Ford Focus vehicles have been sold across the globe
since the nameplate launched in 1998
Focus has served as the basis for popular multi-activity, crosssover and
performance vehicles like the European C-MAX, Kuga and Focus RS, plus the
North American SVT Focus
The next-generation Focus moves to a truly global Ford C-car platform with
only minor variations between models sold around the world
DETROIT, Jan. 11, 2010 With more than 9.2 million examples of the Ford Focus
sold worldwide since its 1998 launch, the car has played a leading role in the
global C-segment for more than a decade. To better understand where Focus is
going, its essential to look back at the creation of a new standard exactly
what Ford accomplished when the very first Focus was revealed.
Ford Motor Company released the new Focus, successor to its popular Escort,
first in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region in 1998 and then as a 2000 model
in North America. A major change from the Escorts soft lines, Focus
exemplified Fords New Edge styling cues with upswept headlamp pods and
dynamic, angular lines and set the benchmark in its segment for driving
dynamics.
The new Focus was nominated and won Car of the Year in both the U.S. and
Europe and has claimed well over 100 major awards in subsequent years.
